Microsoft Purview Sensitivity Labels: Sensitivity label grouping modernization coming this fall (?)

There is a change coming to Microsoft Purview Information Protection that simplifies sensitivity label architecture. The goal is to make label management easier, more scalable, and less rigid for organizations. The new model will only include standalone labels and sublabels. Parent labels will be replaced by label groups, which act as organizational containers. These groups cannot be applied to content and have no actions or scope, but they retain color and priority for visual organization. Hopefully, this change will make it much easier to move labels around and make other changes in production: for example, converting a standalone label into a sublabel or moving sublabels between groups without breaking dependencies.  From my experience, this update solves one of the biggest challenges in large environments: rigid label hierarchies. Changes coming to the Viva Insights licenses and requirements.

Microsoft is going to include Viva Insights service plans in Microsoft 365 Copilot and it will be applicable to Viva Insights on the web, Viva Insights in Microsoft Teams for Windows desktop, and Viva Insights in Microsoft Teams for iOS/Android.

Some of the changes includes new service plans for Viva Insights, included under Microsoft 365 Copilot subscriptions, making all premium features and capabilities of Viva Insights available to Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed customers. Additionally, the minimum assigned Viva Insights license thresholds for new tenants will increase from 10 to 50 to access the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard, advanced insights, and organizational insights.

The cohort analysis feature between Copilot and non-Copilot users in the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard will be retired as it is today, but still be available in advanced insights.

To fully benefit from this update, organizations should ensure they have the necessary Microsoft 365 Copilot and Viva Insights licenses. Specifically, a minimum of 50 assigned Viva Insights service plans will be required for new tenants to access advanced insights, organizational insights, and the Microsoft Copilot Dashboard. Existing customers with access to these features will not be affected by the new license threshold.

Organizations can create exclusion lists from the Copilot Dashboard if there are users who should not be included for various reasons. To exclude a user from Viva Insights all together, unassign any Viva Insights service plan from that user.

The rollout is currently planned to begin in mid-March 2025 and is expected to be completed by late April 2025. Organizations should review their current configurations and notify users about this change. Data processing for newly licensed users will begin in early April 2025.
