New Year, New Momentum: Here are three Copilot updates to get you started into 2026

It's a new year, so I thought I'd start the year by mentioning three features already released, or soon going to be released. One of the features improves the workflow of sharing files with comments, the other improves the application specific Copilot, and the last feature makes it easer to find the nest available timeslot for a 1:1 meeting. As with all of my other posts, timelines can shift, and the timelines in this post is as written in the Message Center at the time of posting. AI-Summary experience when sharing files. With this new feature, copilot intent to help users share files with clearer context in just a few steps. Users will get the capability to generate a concise summary of a file and include it when sharing from the File Explorer share dialog or the OneDrive activity center. 1000 channels in Teams, sending an invite to channel meeting participants and Automatic transcription of videos

If you have a meeting recording but forgot to add transcriptions, it might be good to know automatic transcription will be added to files uploaded to SharePoint, Yammer or office.com. This feature is currently rolling out and should be generally available by late August. The feature is ON by default, but can be controlled by the set-SPOTenant command. If you are not familiar with how transcriptions work, here is a blogpost to get you up to speed.

Not the most technical update, but still an update that will be appreciated. According to roadmap item 127496, the number of channels per team will increase from 200 standard and 200 shared channels to 1000 channels combined + 30 private channels.  This should give organizations great flexibility within their teams. The feature is currently rolling out in preview, and should be generally available by the end of September.

Organizers of channel meetings should soon be able to also send invites directly to participants of the channel by a turn of a toggle in the invite. This will send invites directly to members' mailboxes, and the chances of missing a scheduled channel meeting should be something in the past. Roadmap item 142405 should be rolling out some time during August.
