Upcoming Microsoft Purview updates for DSPM, auto-labeling, and DLP quarantine

Microsoft has announced several Microsoft Purview updates rolling out between now and mid‑June 2026. These changes introduce a refreshed Data Security Posture Management experience, expanded auto‑labeling actions for SharePoint and OneDrive, and a new file quarantine enforcement option for Data Loss Prevention. Together, they focus on improving visibility and guided remediation across data and AI scenarios, strengthening classification accuracy at scale, and adding stronger containment when sensitive content violates policy. As with all Message center updates, timelines are subject to change and may shift during rollout.

Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management: new unified experience

Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) is getting a new unified experience that complements the existing DSPM (classic) and DSPM for AI (classic) experiences. The new experience is designed to bring visibility and control together across traditional data and AI‑driven environments, using outcome‑based guided workflows intended to help organizations prioritize risks and remediate faster. It adds AI observability, enhanced posture reporting, and Security Copilot agents that assist with tasks such as triage and policy management. Coverage is also expanded beyond Microsoft data through third‑party signals from partners including BigID, Cyera, OneTrust, and Varonis, providing a more consolidated view of sensitive data across clouds and platforms. In addition, Data Risk Assessments now extend to Fabric and item‑level analysis, with new remediation actions such as bulk disabling of overshared SharePoint links. Existing policies and configurations remain unchanged, and no default policy changes are introduced.

Reference ID: MC1191257, associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 532728. Public Preview (Worldwide) rollout began in early December 2025 and completes by early April 2026. General Availability (Worldwide) rollout begins in early May 2026 and completes by late May 2026.

Microsoft Purview auto‑labeling: new override and removal actions

New auto‑labeling actions for SharePoint and OneDrive in Microsoft Purview has been announced. These enhancements allow administrators to automatically override existing sensitivity labels, including labels applied manually by users, or to remove a specific label when content no longer meets policy conditions. This affects organizations using auto‑labeling policies for data at rest and changes how label consistency can be enforced as classification schemes and business requirements evolve. Once configured, sensitivity labels on existing files may change automatically based on policy logic, improving long‑term governance and auditability without relying on end users to reclassify content.

To create a new Auto-label policy, go to the Microsoft Purview portal → Information Protection → Policies →  Auto‑labeling policies, select or create an auto‑labeling policy, choose the appropriate action to override or remove labels, and save.

This update is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 558342. General Availability (Worldwide) rollout begins in mid‑April 2026 and is expected to complete by late‑April 2026.

Microsoft Purview DLP: file quarantine for SharePoint and OneDrive

Microsoft has announced a new File Quarantine action in Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention for SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business. When a file violates a DLP policy configured with this action, it is automatically isolated in an admin‑controlled quarantine location to prevent further access or sharing. At the original location, a tombstone file replaces the content to preserve collaboration context and inform users that the file has been quarantined. Administrators retain investigation visibility through audit logs, DLP alerts, and Activity Explorer, but files must be restored manually, and original sharing permissions are not automatically reinstated. This introduces a stronger enforcement option that helps reduce the risk of accidental data exposure while fitting into existing compliance workflows.

This feature will be a new action to select when setting up the policy. I recommend reading the following two guides to get started (when the feature is released)

This feature is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 557190. Public Preview rollout begins in mid‑April 2026 and is expected to complete by early May 2026. General Availability (Worldwide) rollout begins in early June 2026 and is expected to complete by mid‑June 2026.
